Fire in the Fenway

NAG members Jeanette Ector and Galeen Jones, along with 130 other residents in two Peterborough Street buildings, were evacuated early Tuesday morning as fire swept through seven businesses next-door, gutting the lot. No one was injured.

Jeanette spent Tuesday night at a local hotel, while Galeen was told she could return to her apartment Tuesday afternoon. Herald writer Jessica Fargen has the story here. Unfortunately, she began her story by referring to Jeanette as "One wheelchair-bound woman..." This language reflects the prejudice that wheelchairs are prisons rather than freedom-giving mobility devices akin to bicycles and cars. (The only people who are wheelchair-bound are those who will be using a wheelchair in their future, and those who have been tied to their chairs by irresponsible nursing homes.)

Two of the 100 firemen who came to the scene were injured by slipping on the ice, and were taken to the hospital. Reporters said that they would be fine, but it points up how dangerous icy sidewalks can be for everyone.

Boston Herald story with a lot of pictures is here.

The Herald in today's edition also spelled Peterborough St. "Peterboro" St. which indicates the reporter may not have been on scene as they would have noticed the street sign that sez Peterborough St.
I am suspect arson may have been the cause of the fire since it has been reported it began at 2 AM and Thorntons closes at midnight. Also the fast spread of the fire indicates an accelerant may havebeen used.An arson investigation will provide the answers. The fire reminds me of the late night arson for profit fires in the Fenway on Symphony Rd. and Westland Av areas in the 1970s
